Common Questions About Strength Training & Rehab

What is our 1-on-1 strength exercise rehabilitation?

Strength exercise rehabilitation is a corrective form of exercise designed to strengthen weak areas of the body. It plays an important role in recovery from injury, improving mobility and function, and reducing pain.

Using our knowledge as Osteopaths, we develop personalised exercise programs to help you safely recover from injury. Our programs are also designed to improve your posture, strength, and balance which means you’ll reduce the likelihood of injuring yourself in the future, whilst helping maximising your power and wellbeing.

What are the benefits of strength exercise rehabilitation?

Being able to move freely with minimal pain plays a major part in the quality of your life. Living with pain, or not being able to participate in activities such as sport or recreational activities can affect your physical and mental health. By improving your mobility, functionality, strength and flexibility you’ll not only be able to participate in daily activities more freely, but you’ll also improve your physical and mental health, and reduce your chances of injury in the future.

Who is strength exercise for?

Anyone can benefit from exercise rehabilitation. It can help improve strength, fitness, posture, flexibility as well as help you achieve particular sporting goals and reduce the risk of future injury. It can also assist with:

  • chronic back and knee pain
  • ankle instability
  • injuries that don’t respond to manual treatment
  • preventing falls
  • transitioning back into regular exercise
  • improved health markers such as blood pressure and cholesterol
  • weight loss
  • improved mental wellbeing

How will strength exercise rehabilitation help me?

Personalised exercise rehabilitation is designed for your body. That means we address any current injuries, weaknesses, muscle imbalances, chronic pain or underlying musculoskeletal conditions that you may have, and design a personalised program with these in mind. This ensures that the strength exercise you do is safe and beneficial to your specific needs, and won’t cause additional problems like following generic rehab programs (like those found on YouTube) would do.

Can strength exercise rehab help me recover from injury?

Exercise rehabilitation plays a very important role in your recovery from an injury. The goal of a rehabilitation program is to restore optimal function so you can return to your every-day activities with minimal risk of re-injury. Rehabilitation exercises do this by restoring muscle strength, endurance, power and improving flexibility. Of course, some injuries do require a period of rest, but research shows that maintaining mobility while stabilising the injury gives the best results.

How quickly can I get back to my sport?

If you’re an athlete who has sustained an injury, one of the first questions you’re likely to ask is how quickly you can get back to competition. At Doctors of Osteo, we understand your desire to get back to your sport, and the importance that exercise rehabilitation plays to help you get there. We take a multi-dimensional approach in getting you back to competition by rehabilitating your injury and addressing any issues (e.g. poor strength or balance) that may have contributed to it. We aim to help you return to your sport as quickly as possible, but stronger than before!

How will exercise rehab improve my movement?

Pain has a huge influence on how well you move. When you have pain in one area of your body, it’s normal to adjust your movements to avoid further discomfort. For example, if your foot is causing you pain, you’ll naturally change the way you walk to avoid making it worse (This is known as compensation). However, this can end up causing problems in other areas of your body such as your knee or hip. By developing a targeted exercise program, we can help reduce the source of the pain, help you move better, and reduce the likelihood of compensations.

Where are the 1-on-1 strength exercises held?

All our Osteopaths at Doctors of Osteo are inspired to help you feel better and stronger and will guide you through your exercises if they believe you will benefit from it.

All our exercise sessions are held in our beautifully equipped onsite gym and will involve a one-on-one session with your caring Osteopath. Each face-to-face session will be 45 minutes long, and you may be given exercises with videos to do at home via our free Physitrack App!

What will my strength exercise program involve?

Your prescribed exercise program will be adapted at every stage of your recovery. For example, you may start with basic stretches and mobilisation exercises. As your condition improves, we will add more functional exercises to your program which may include progressive loading to the muscles, tendons and ligaments to develop strength.

Later-stage rehabilitation exercises will focus on more complex movements designed to improve power, flexibility and stamina, to help you get back to doing what you love.

Can I do my strength exercise program at home?

At Doctors of Osteo, we believe in empowering our patients with knowledge so they can continue to take care of their health at home. To make things easier for you, all of our exercise programs use equipment that you can find in any gym or use in your own home. We will devise a personalised program for you, that you can work through in the comfort and privacy of your own home or gym, so you can continue to look after your body.

All of our exercise rehabilitation programs include complimentary access to our online exercise program, which means your exercise program is delivered to you via our free Physitrack App, so you can access it on your phone, tablet or laptop. This enables you to continue with your specific exercises at home or in the workplace.
